Fondée en 1834 par le journaliste Ludger Duvernay dans le cadre du mouvement patriote, la Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Montréal (SSJB) constitue la plus ancienne institution militante et toujours active pour la promotion et la défense de ce peuple issu de la Nouvelle-France, qu’on appelait alors canadien, puis canadien-français, et qui forme aujourd’hui le coeur de la nation québécoise, avec tous ceux et celles qui en ont fait leur patrie au fil du temps.Depuis ses tout débuts, la SSJB n’a eu de cesse de s’impliquer activement dans la vie démocratique du Québec. Elle a joué un rôle important dans son histoire culturelle, sociale et économique, tout comme dans la définition de notre identité nationale.
